The corruption risks encountered in the water sector are imminent and diverse. They range from petty bribery in water delivery to procurement related looting, from covering up industrial pollution, to manipulation and distortion of fundamental water management and allocation policies. This makes tackling corruption in the water sector a priority for policy-makers and practitioners around the world. As one of its key recommendations, the 2008 Global Corruption Report calls for the scaling up and refining of diagnostics of corruption in water adapted to specific local contexts, to lay the foundations for and ensure effectiveness of targeted anti- corruption reform.

The workshop will showcase how corruption in the water sector can be tackled through innovative strategies that utilize collaborative evidence-based research to inform and influence policy-making. Specifically, the workshop will draw upon five country-based processes that each promote water integrity in complementary, but distinctive manners. Each country context has diverse socio-economic characteristics, distinct political approaches to address corruption, and varying opportunities for civil society engagement, government openness, private sector involvement. These factors all provide various entry points and opportunities for effective anti-corruption partnerships. 

By inviting practitioners to share these unique country experiences, the workshop will highlight the utility of locally tailored and owned processes based upon multi-stakeholder platforms to improve water integrity.  The different case studies presented will analyze water issues within the broader governance framework and demonstrate a growing need to engage with sector governance as a strategy toward reducing overall corruption in society.

The workshop outcomes will form an important knowledge base to revise and improve, as required, different ongoing and planned water integrity programmes undertaken by the workshop convenors as well as other organizations. It is also anticipated that the workshop will generate interest from stakeholders in other countries and that similar studies and processes will be initiated by them.
